Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

at Thorpe Willoughby Community Primary School

At Thorpe Willoughby CP School, all children are equally valued and fully included in both the educational and wider life of the school. We recognise and respond to the needs of every child to ensure the best possible outcomes. Our approach is guided by our six school values: Community, Challenge, Care, Aspiration, Respect, and Resilience.

We have high aspirations and expectations for all pupils with SEND, ensuring they have access to an appropriate and inclusive learning environment. We celebrate their achievements and share successes, ensuring that pupils are valued as full members of our school community. We fully recognise that pupils with SEND benefit most from excellent, high-quality teaching, as highlighted in the Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF) SEND in Mainstream Schools Guidance Report.

The Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice (2015) identifies four broad areas of need:

1. Communication and Interaction (C&I)
This includes Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) as well as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism.

2. Cognition and Learning (C&L)
This includes a range of learning difficulties, from moderate learning difficulties (MLD) to severe learning difficulties (SLD), and also profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), where children are likely to have complex learning needs alongside a physical disability or sensory impairment.

3. Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
This covers a wide range of social and emotional difficulties, which may include withdrawal, isolation, or challenging behaviours. Some children may also have conditions such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), or attachment disorders.

4. Sensory and/or Physical Needs
This includes children with visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities, or other sensory needs that require specialist support or equipment to access education effectively.

Further information on how we meet the needs of children with SEND can be found in our SEND Information Report and our SEND Policy.

At Thorpe Willoughby CP School, we have two Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs). Mrs Siddons is our Early Years SENCO, supporting Nursery and Reception children, while Mrs Kemp is the main school SENCO, overseeing Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 (Years 1–6).

Mrs Siddons is also our Early Years Leader and a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team. Mrs Kemp is Deputy Headteacher and part of the School’s Leadership Team. Both Mrs Kemp and Mrs Siddons are members of the school’s Safeguarding Team and work closely with the Headteacher (Designated Safeguarding Lead) and the Pastoral Lead (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).

Mrs Kemp is also part of the Pupil Premium Team in school, working alongside Mrs Alexander, Pupil Premium Champion.

At Thorpe Willoughby, we fully recognise the important role the SENCO plays in the strategic development of our SEND provision. We also understand that supporting pupils with SEND is everyone’s responsibility, ensuring that all children can achieve and flourish in our school. Mrs Kemp works closely with all teachers and teaching assistants to lead training, access specialist support, and organise provision for individual pupils, including those receiving school-level support and those with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Mrs Kemp meets with the SEND Governor on a half-termly basis to review and discuss SEND provision across the school.

The school governor with responsibility for SEND is Mrs Reid, who is also the Chair of Governors. She oversees the school’s SEND provision to ensure that the needs of all pupils are met and supported effectively.
