Mental Health and Pastoral Intent

“A child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support” Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

Thorpe Willoughby Primary School is passionate about making a difference to the lives of children and we recognise the vital role we play in the mental health and wellbeing of all members of our community: pupils, families, and colleagues. Whatever challenges our children, families, the school, our team or the community face, we always listen, support and put actions into place where necessary. We believe that good mental health is key to developing happier, more confident and resilient children and adults and we are committed to ensure that an ethos of positive mental health is at the heart of all that we do.

Our school values of Aspiration, Respect, Caring, Community, Challenge and Resilience are integral to supporting everyone’s mental health and wellbeing. Our curriculum and pastoral support aim to provide all learners, with appropriate strategies and support to positively support mental health We believe that the social and emotional skills, knowledge and behaviours that children learn in the classroom help build their resilience and is key to how they will manage their mental health throughout their lives.

What Inclusion and Effective Mental Health support means to us:

• Our PSHE curriculum is designed to ensure all children understand how to live and lead healthy lifestyles to maintain physical and mental well-being. They will gain confidence and skills to actively speak freely about their emotions, thoughts and values.

• We support the child and the family and the child stays at the centre of every conversation.

• We encourage all members of our community to talk openly about issues that they may be facing.

•  We have supportive and trusted adults in school to work with children and families.

• When children are here, we can support and educate them – attendance does matter.

• We provide support from our Pastoral team, Senco, Safeguarding team and Senior Mental Health Lead

• We have members of staff trained as Mental Health First Aiders

• We consult with external agencies, where necessary, so we can provide our children and families with the support they need.

• We use evidence-based interventions e.g. Drawing and Talking, Lego Therapy
