Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

SEND at Thorpe Willoughby Community Primary School

At Thorpe Willoughby CP School, all children are equally valued and included fully into the educational and wider life of school. We recognise the needs of every child to ensure the best possible outcomes for all. Our approach is underpinned by our six school values of Community, Challenge, Care, Aspiration, Respect and Resilience.

We have high aspirations and expectations for all pupils with SEND, ensuring they have access to an appropriate and inclusive environment. We celebrate achievements and share successes ensuring pupils are full members of our school community. We fully recognise that pupils with SEND have the greatest need for excellent, high quality teaching. (EEF SEND in Mainstream Schools Guidance Report).

The Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2015) outline four broad areas of need.

The Four Broad Areas are:

1. Communication & Interaction (C&I)

This includes Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) as well as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Asperger's Syndrome and Autism.

2. Cognition & Learning (C&L)

This includes a range of learning difficulties, including moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) and also profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) where children are likely to have severe and complex learning difficulties as well as a physical disability or sensory impairment.

3. Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH)

This includes a wide range of social and emotional difficulties. These may include becoming withdrawn or isolated, as well as displaying challenging behaviours.

Some children may have disorders such as attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) or attachment disorder.

4. Sensory &/or Physical Needs

This includes children with vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI) or a multi-sensory impairment (MSI) - a combination of vision and hearing difficulties. Children with sensory and/or physical needs require support and equipment to access their learning.

Further information on how we meet the needs of children with SEND can be found in our SEND information report and our SEND Policy.

Our Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator is Mrs J Kemp. Mrs Kemp is part of the school's leadership team and is the Deputy Headteacher in school. She is also part of the school's Safeguarding Team and works closely with the school's Headteacher (Designated Safeguarding Lead) and the Pastoral Lead/Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Mrs Kemp is also part of the Pupil Premium Team in school, working alongside Mrs Alexander, Pupil Premium Champion.

At Thorpe Willoughby, we fully recognise the important role the SENCO has in the strategic development of our approach. In addition, we understand that our pupils with SEND is everyone's responsibility to ensure they achieve and flourish in our school. Mrs Kemp works closely alongside all teachers and teaching assistants in school to lead training, access specialist training and support and organise provision for individual pupils including those at school level support and those pupils with an EHCP (Education and Health Care plans).

Mrs Kemp meets the SEND Governor half-termly.

The school governor with responsibility for SEND is Mrs Tracy Reid.
